Sky Map is an application developed by the team at Google that allows users to open a window to outer space directly from their smartphones.

Instead of streets and squares we will be able to see the constellations and planets from our position. That means that if you are in a unintelligently lit city, an underground bunker or anywhere indoor then you will just know what stars you can’t view. But if you are luckily outdoor, in a summer night, happily alone o with someone special at your side…then it’s when you can fully embrace the XXIst century and cry out to heaven how cool it’s having a smartphone.

Let me explain. When you point your phone at the sky, the planets and constellations will be shown. You can just browse the sky or look for a specific celestial object.

To use it, you just open the app, point the camera skywards, and let the magic happen. After waiting a few seconds for the app to load, you will see the constellations begin to form on your screen. You can then learn their names, positions, etc.

Along with this function, Sky Map includes another interesting feature that allows you to locate different planets and constellations. To do so, you just have to enter the name of the planet you are looking for, for example Mars, and point your camera to the sky. The screen will then show you a circle with an arrow indicating exactly where it lies in the sky.
