Download Godville
City of God is a very interesting game, it’s interesting is that players can not directly control the game character, but you can give orders to the role, just like other games in the same task to a role.
What Godville does have: a hero of might and magic, HP/MP, gold, scores of monsters, quests, battles, exploration, an unfolding storyline, rolling for damages, enchanted loot, and absolutely all of your favorite typical MMORPG adventure gambits. What Godville doesn’t have: gameplay. That’s right, this is a zero player game.
You’re God to a hero who roams the countryside seeking greatness. How will he make his name in the world? Actually, that’s not for you to decide – the game will randomly generate actions for the guy, resulting in increasing his stats, discovering new realms, and acquiring items. You don’t have to do anything at all, whatsoever. The game plays itself.
The hero keeps an incredibly entertaining play-by-play diary so you can check up on his actions. You do have a select few ways of interacting with the guy – you can Encourage or Punish him from your godly home in the sky, as well as shout down heavenly commands from on high. He won’t necessarily take heed, however, and for the most part will simply evolve at random.
As your hero increases in level, you’ll be able to pit him against heroes of other players in the community. The world is actually super rich with detail; an accompanying Wiki lets you in on the backstory of the people and places your adventurer will come across.
Godville is a quirky game, the likes of which I’ve never seen before. It’s “addictive” in a strange way, since mostly what you’re doing is reading about what happens to your hero without performing any direct action yourself. In that, though, it feels like the perfect RPG for someone who doesn’t have the time or the desire to actually play an RPG, yet loves all the lore: you just sit back on your cloudy perch and watch as the mortal below does all the dirty work for you.
