A RPG game which you play with only one button widget placed in your mobile device’s home screen? I’d have bet that wasn’t likely happening… until I found ru3ch iniatitive’s Widget RPG.
No one can deny the originality of the game. It has already won that badge. Does it make sense? Well that’s up for discussion. At least it sets a precedence which I’m pretty sure will make other titles come up.
Widget RPG consists of a single button widget placed on your home screen. You must tap it frantically like there’s no tomorrow. The reason? You character’s life keeps on with every new tap. Thus, your character will evolve, collect items, defeat enemies and travel in its virtual world impelled by the action of your fingerprint touching your phone’s display. Oh, crazy!
Launch the app (the widget cannot be launched, just tapped) in order to keep track of your character. Inventory, level, health, attack, defense, luck and other parameters will improve as you tap. In addition, you can set where you want it to move and review its life from its Famebook’s timeline. You can take just a few decisions: basically, drop items and set destination. Does it sound boring and weird? Welcome to ZPG’s (Zero Player Game) world.
No complaints about pixelated retro graphics and, above all, no complaints about controls scheme. However, a game like this would make all sense if it could be integrated with other apps’ widgets. Thus, the game will go on as you keep tapping ANY of the widgets placed on your home screen, instead of non-sense tapping to an apparently non-responsive widget.
